A glass greenhouse of tropical plants above a city roof at golden hour.

About

Kei Botanics keeps rare shade plants for rooms that were not designed as gardens. The work is closer to hospitality than to retail: memberships, hours, and a rule about not rushing the leaves.

With Hall & Mercer it opened an atrium above a shop floor in Taipei. You reach the plants through haberdashery.

The story, in brief · 197 words

The greenhouse above the shop floor

Kei Botanics and Hall & Mercer have opened a members' greenhouse on the roof of a Taipei haberdasher. The shop did not become a lobby for the garden. You enter through ribbons and buttons, then a stair that was already there. Upstairs: a glass roof, a stone trough, ferns, and the city held slightly out of focus.

The rules fit on one card, set in the same type as the plant labels. No flash. No cut flowers. Twenty minutes if you are new. Kei would prefer that a writer sit the twenty minutes before describing anything. A garden seen from the door is a backdrop. After the light moves across the water, it is a room with a tempo.

The piece ran as a room, not as a lifestyle opening. The Lantern led with the stair. Island Review spared two pages and one photograph. Strait printed the rules of entry. Han River Paper filed it as a day you plan. Gulf Ledger asked for the membership count and received a range. The preview is the atrium itself, with a finite number of chairs. Downstairs, the counter still sells thread. That sentence was a condition of the story.
